Basement Flooring – Flooring in a finished basement can be stylish and comfortable but be aware of two variables.
Jul 01, 2014When it comes to basement flooring installation, there are two critical issues that need to be considered when choosing the flooring materials.
The two things that could cause serious issues in your basement are water vapor and a flood event.
Water Vapor rising from Basement Concrete Slab
Water vapor occurs when hydrostatic pressure forces any water below the basement floor to vaporize. This vapor is then able to pass through the porous concrete. If any flooring is laid directly on the concrete floor, the moisture will become trapped and continue to accumulate over time.
The build up of water vapor will cause problems such as mold and mildew. Also, if the flooring is carpet or manufactured from organic material, such as wood or laminate, not only will mold grow, but the floor will buckle and begin to lift and become unusable.
A Basement Flood Event
A flood event happens when water enters the basement space from outside, from ground water/hydrostatic pressure or, when a plumbing leak occurs. Wherever you have a plumbing leak you can be certain of one thing, gravity will ensure it ends up on your basement floor.
Any flood event in the basement will cause carpet or organic flooring materials to grow mold and mildew. Once mold and mildew begin to grow, you will be faced with a moldy smell in your basement along with compromised air quality in the rest of your home. This is due to what is called a stack effect.Air will always come up from your basement into your upper living areas.
The Basement Flooring Solution
Our flooring is stylish, has character and warmth and it looks beautiful in any home. We offer oak, mahogany, cherry and walnut hardwood flooring that looks exactly like the real thing. We also have tile type options. These tile basement flooring options come as 12″x 12″ PVC ceramic and slate tile that looks perfect in any bathroom, kitchen or mud room.
At Rescon Basement Solutions, we use an inorganic, PVC waterproof flooring that sits up from the concrete floor. The protective factor lies in the fact that the flooring does not lay directly on the concrete basement slab. Using a “floating” flooring system allows the floor to “breath” and ensures that the water vapor does not get trapped under the flooring.
